Description
Nos. 1-15 Gallowgate is a group of shops and offices built in the late 19th century. The structure is made of brick with an ashlar ground floor and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring a corner copper turret. It stands four storeys tall with an attic and has a corner bay along with nine additional bays. Rusticated pilasters frame the shops, and the left corner features a bank entrance with a double panelled door and overlight, flanked by columns that support a round arch. There is an office door in an arched entrance in bay number seven and a blocked door in the third bay. Full-height oriel windows are positioned above the entrances, with the corner oriel being round. The other windows are paired sashes set within architraves. The ground floor has a frieze and cornice, while the top cornice is accented by consoles that flank high shaped gables, which have ball finials on alternate pediments. The first two bays contain attic windows above the oriels, and there is a similar gable on the right end bay. Additionally, there are four dormers with alternating pediments over the other bays. The rear of the building abuts part of the town wall.
