Description

Leazes Arcade is a synagogue, now a shopping arcade, constructed in 1880 by John Johnstone. It is built of sandstone ashlar with a rock-faced plinth, and has a Welsh slate roof. Designed in a North Italian style, the building comprises a basement and two storeys, with a 1:3:1 bay arrangement, the central three bays terminating in a gable. The outer entrance bays feature pilasters, double doors with fanlights incorporating circular glazing bars, and pink granite shafts beneath moulded round arches. The upper floor has five arcaded windows.

Pilasters flank the central three bays, and an intersecting segmental arcade incorporates two side and four central ground-floor windows. Upper-floor windows are paired and set beneath round arches, each tympanum featuring a carved Star of David. The building is punctuated by a sloped Lombard frieze rising to the gable and an 8-foil blind window in the gable peak, topped by an acroterion. Decorative blocks above the pilasters are capped with high, curved pyramidal finials displaying a fishscale pattern. The interior contains galleries.
