Description

Numbers 1-8 are a group of four semi-detached houses built around 1830, located on the south side of Summerhill Grove in Newcastle upon Tyne. The houses are constructed with English garden wall bond brick, featuring an ashlar basement and ashlar dressings. They have Welsh slate roofs. Each house is three storeys high, with some attics, and two bays wide. Steps lead up to the doors on the left-hand side of each pair. The doors are six-panelled, with overlights recessed within panelled reveals of flat Tuscan doorcases. The windows have original glazing bars in those of Numbers 1, 2, and 7; these are margined in Numbers 3 and 4 and plain in Numbers 5 and 8. Number 8 has canted bays to the basement and ground floor, while Number 5 has them to the ground and first floors. The glazing in Number 6 has been replaced. Projecting stone sills are visible on the ground and second-floor windows, with bands at the first floor level and first-floor sill level. The hipped roofs are topped with ashlar-bonded brick chimneys. Original spear-headed area railings are present, along with plain handrails to the steps.
