Description
The tall granite war memorial is located outside the west end of St Anthony’s Church on Belmont Street in Walker. It features a small cross with a moulded foot that rises from the cornice of a square-section shaft. The shaft is set on a corniced octagonal plinth, which itself rests on a three-stepped base. The cornice of the shaft is decorated with a carved frieze of foliage, and a small shield is carved in relief on the top of each side of the shaft. The plinth’s cornice is also adorned with foliage carvings.
The front face of the plinth bears a dedicatory inscription that reads: "REMEMBER WITH HONOUR/ THOSE WHO BY THEIR DEATH/ HAVE ENNOBLED/ THIS VILLAGE IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-18." The names of those commemorated are recorded on the other faces of the plinth.
