Description
The war memorial outside the Church of All Saints in Four Oaks is a tall sandstone cross located in front of the church porch, near the roadside. It features a Latin cross atop an octagonal shaft, which is set on a tall plinth and a single-stepped base. The four sides of the plinth are adorned with bronze plaques that display inscriptions and the names of those commemorated. The plaque on the front (south) face includes the main dedicatory inscription, which is decorated with a laurel wreath.
The inscription reads: "IN MEMORIAM/ GLORIOUS THEIR FORTUNE/ SPLENDID THEIR FATE/ THEIR TOMB AN ALTAR/ FOR MOURNING./ THEY HAVE REMEMBRANCE/ FOR LAMENTATION/ PRAISE/ 1914 - 1919/ PRO PATRIA." The names listed include rank and regiment. The memorial is situated in an area paved with black bricks and lighter stone, and it is enclosed at the rear by a curved stone wall that has a gate providing access to the church. The wall also incorporates two shallow benches for placing floral tributes.
