Description

Christ Church is a parish church built in 1866 by Austin and Johnson, with a north aisle and vestry added in 1903 by J. Potts and Son. It is constructed of snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a plinth. The roof is steeply pitched, made of graduated Westmorland slate, with flat stone gable copings. The church has an aisled nave and a south porch, along with north and south porches leading to the apsed chancel. Designed in the Early English style, it includes lancet windows that are paired in the south aisle and clerestory, and stepped in the north aisle. The south porch has a double door with elaborate hinges and a gable. The west front is framed by massive buttresses and features arcading, some of which is blind, along with buttresses to the nave. At the west end, there is a boarded fleche with a slate roof and a weather-vane finial, along with stone cross finials and decorative ridge tiles on the chancel.

Inside, the church has double-chamfered arches in the five-bay nave arcades, and a high chancel arch with an inner arch supported by shafted corbels decorated with realistic foliage. The font is square and made of Frosterley marble. The apse is painted to represent a Gothic arcade. There is also a memorial tablet on the south wall of the chancel dedicated to the founders and benefactors: H.L. Pattinson, R.R. Redmayne, and J.M. Redmayne.
