Description
The Urban Studies Centre is a former railway station built in 1842 for the Brandling Junction Railway, and it was restored in 1978. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with quoins, and it features a roof made of Welsh slate with stone gable coping. It is a single-storey structure with two bays by two.
On the north elevation, there is a blind left bay, while the right side has a 4-centred arch with alternating block jambs leading to a boarded double door. The south elevation, which faces the railway lines, includes a projecting bay on the left that contains a tall three-light stone-mullioned window with a label mould above it. The gable peak over the window displays the Brandling Arms and the letters "BR." To the right of this bay, there is a blocked doorway under a 4-centred arch.
Historically, work on the railway began in 1836, and the first station on this site was constructed of wood.
