Description
Christ Church is a parish church built in 1868 by Johnson and Hicks. It is constructed from coursed, squared rock-faced sandstone and has a roof made of Welsh slate. The church features a 4-bay nave, north and south aisles, and a south porch, along with a 2-bay chancel that includes a south vestry and a north organ loft. At the north-east corner of the nave, there is a tower with a stair turret. The design is in the Early English style.
On the west elevation, there are two windows with two lights each, adorned with cinquefoils. The clerestory contains cinquefoil windows, while the aisles have lancet windows. The high-pitched roofs are topped with gable stone copings and finials, and the tower is crowned with a tall broach spire.
Inside, the nave arcades are supported by round piers that have plinths, clasping bands, and acanthus capitals, with stiff leaf stops on the hood moulds of the arches. The furnishings include a Norman-style front made of Frosterley marble on a pedestal with four columns, as well as choir stalls, a rood screen, a lectern, and altar woodwork in a Gothic style, all of high quality.
