Description
The Church of St Bede is a Roman Catholic parish church located on Chapel Road in Jarrow. It was built between 1860 and 1862, with additions made by J Storer in 1883. The church is constructed from coursed squared sandstone and has a roof made of Welsh slate. It is oriented north-south and features a full-width low entrance porch added at the ritual west side, along with a large aisled ritual south transept from 1883.
The original building is designed in the early English style, while the additions reflect a perpendicular style. The church has a three-bay nave with lancet windows and a transept that consists of four bays. Above the elaborately decorated door in the gable, there is a large rose window, which is adorned with an ogee drip mould featuring angel stops and fleur-de-lis finials.
On the south elevation, at aisle level, there is a string course with griffin stops, and at each end, there is a two-light window. The clerestory contains four perpendicular windows, and the south gable features a five-light window with canopied niches on either side, positioned between two octagonal turrets that are decorated with dragons and gargoyles. The east gable of the church is rendered.
