Description
St Bede's Parochial Church Centre is a cooperative headquarters that was built between 1919 and 1922 and converted in 1977. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features hipped Westmorland slate roofs, along with two brick wall stacks topped with ashlar caps. It has an ashlar plinth, quoins, a first floor cill band, and a dentilated eaves cornice.
The street front displays nine windows arranged in a pattern of 2:2:1:2:2, with a slightly projecting center and wings. The central doorway features double panel doors and a very ornate overlight set in an ashlar surround, which includes Ionic columns, a pulvinated frieze, an open pediment, and a swagged cartouche. Flanking the doorway are four glazing bar sashes with raised brick keystones and blind panels above. Above the central doorway is a window in a recessed rusticated ashlar surround with concave jambs and a raised and carved keystone, with four glazing bar sashes on either side.
On the left return, there is a projecting stack with a panel on the upper floor decorated with carved swags. To the left, there is a single sash window with another sash above it, and to the right, a door with an overlight and a sash above. The hall at the rear features four boarded Diocletian windows on each side and a blocked similar opening at the back, surrounded by single-storey offices that have blocked windows and two doorways with moulded ashlar surrounds.
Inside, the entrance and staircase hall includes raised and fielded panels, Doric columns and pilasters, as well as round arches with moulded imposts and keystones. There is a single flight and return staircase with an iron balustrade and brass handrail, illuminated by a small Venetian window. The panelled boardroom features a moulded plaster ceiling, moulded door surrounds, with the double doors having carved friezes and moulded hoods, all complemented by panel doors.
