Description

Ashfield Parents Centre and Ashfield Nursery School, along with the attached walls, gate piers, and gate, is a building dating from around 1830, originally constructed for Richardson, a tanner. It is now used for educational purposes. The building is made of sandstone ashlar and features dark slate roofs that are graduated over the main block.

The structure is U-shaped, with wings that extend forward to enclose a garden. It has two storeys and the main block consists of three bays. At the center, there is a projecting enclosed Tuscan porch supported by four pilasters, which contains a six-panelled door with an overlight and narrow sidelights. Above this porch is a tripartite window with renewed glazing set in a plain reveal, featuring a projecting stone sill. The side bays have similar single windows.

The building has an eaves band and a gutter cornice, topped with a low-pitched hipped roof that does not have any visible chimneys. The slightly lower wings have three similar windows on their inner returns, some of which are blind. The end walls facing the street have four-panelled doors, with the door for No. 101 on the right being renewed, and one window on each floor.

The quadrant walls that enclose the garden have ramped flat coping and are complemented by two tall square gate piers that are Gothic-panelled and topped with overlapping pyramidal coping. A wrought iron gate with dog bars provides access.
