Description

Elswick Lodge is a villa built in 1844 for Robert Hawthorn, now serving as a rehabilitation centre. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof with brick chimneys and stone gable copings. It has two storeys and attics, with three bays, including a one-bay set-back on the left and a lower one-bay extension further to the left. The villa is designed in the Jacobean style.

The main block has a central double part-glazed door set within a flat Tuscan porch that includes dentils and a shaped panel above. Above the door are paired sash windows, with additional paired sashes slightly projecting in the outer bays. The façade is framed by giant pilasters and a continuous cornice, which is corbelled in the centre bay. The building features shaped gables on three dormers with paired blind windows, and the set-back left bay is designed in a similar style. The rendered extension has plain sash windows.

At the left end of the main house, there are paired, conjoined octagonal chimneys. An ashlar wall extends forward from the right end of the house, containing a garden door set in an architrave, while an ashlar-coped brick wall continues forward a short distance.
