Description

Trinity House Gate and Chapel is a historic gatehouse and chapel located in Newcastle upon Tyne, forming part of a range of buildings around a courtyard. The structure primarily dates from the 17th century, incorporating earlier buildings, with restoration work carried out in the 19th century, including the refronting of the gatehouse in 1841. The building is constructed of coursed and squared sandstone for the chapel and ashlar for the gatehouse, featuring ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs.

The gatehouse and chapel create a U-shaped range around the courtyard, standing two storeys high with two bays. The left side features a Tudor-arched gateway beneath paired four-light windows with tracery, while the chapel on the right has a gable facing the street, which contains a restored four-light window and two blocked square openings below. Round-headed empty niches flank the chapel window, and there is a roundel at the peak of the asymmetrical gable.

At the rear of the chapel is the entrance hall of Trinity House, located at first floor level, which includes a Classical-style flight of steps and a pedimented front with three bays, narrow sash windows flanking a double half-glazed door, and bays defined by Tuscan pilasters. Inside the chapel, there are panelled walls above a boarded dado and a boarded ceiling with moulded tie beams. The chapel retains its complete furnishings, including pews and a pulpit from the mid-17th century, featuring carved cherubs, strapwork, and small balustrades. A half-glazed west screen separates the chapel from the entrance hall. Additionally, the secretary's room adjoining the chapel is located on the rear first floor of No. 31 Broad Chare and was altered in 1850.
