Description
The Stargate War Memorial is located in a small garden at the junction of Stargate Lane and King Edward Road, just south of the Aged Miners’ Homes. It features a tall column made of Aberdeen granite, topped with an urn that has an eternal flame, and stands on a base made of Spanish freestone.
The column bears inscriptions, with the main dedication stating that it was erected by the Stargate Welcome Home Association in memory of the men whose names are listed below, who died for their country during the Great War from August 1914 to November 1918. A later inscription on the rear of the column commemorates those who served during the years 1939 to 1945. Additionally, a small metal plaque on the memorial's base notes that it was commemorated by the Tyne Gardens Residents Association for the 50th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day in 1995 and Victory over Japan Day in August 1994.
