Description
Hathern War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions, located in the village cemetery off Green Hill Rise. It is prominently placed at the west end of the cemetery, at the end of a processional route, and is enclosed by a circular stone kerb.
The memorial features a polished Aberdeen-granite square-section pillar with a moulded foot, resting on a simple square base. At the top, it has a pedimented hewn-granite capstone, which is surmounted by a Latin cross.
The main inscription is in incised and gilded lettering and reads: IN / HONOURED MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR OF 1914-1918, followed by the names of 21 individuals who fell. On the plinth below, it includes the inscription ‘FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH’/ ALSO OF and an additional name.
On the other faces of the memorial, there is an inscription that reads IN / HONOURED MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE / WORLD WAR OF 1939-1945, along with the names of seven parishioners who died in that conflict, as well as two soldiers who lost their lives in conflicts in Egypt and Cyprus during the 1950s.
