Description
No. 2 Whitewell Lane is a house dated 1669, marked with "RSK" on the quoin at the left. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with large irregular quoins and features a low-pitched roof made of Welsh slate with flat gable coping. The building has two storeys and three bays. The central door is set within a deeply-chamfered projecting stone surround that has a flattened Tudor arch and a low pointed top. All the windows are sash style with glazing bars, featuring flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills, with a narrower window located above the door. There are two brick chimneys at the ends of the house.
Inside, the property includes a staircase with fat turned balusters and a wide flat handrail, leading to a closed-string stair. Some windows have shutters. The main room features a large stone chimney-piece with a moulded three-centred arch, which has scroll-stopped chamfers and is inscribed with "16 RSK82". Historically, Robert Surtees, the great-grandfather of the historian of Durham, occupied this house in the 17th century.
