Description
Stephens Hall is a small fortified manor house, originally dating to 1635, with significant additions in 1653 and considerable alterations in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, alongside minor 20th-century additions. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and ashlar, with quoins, and features 20th-century brick additions. The roof is covered in Welsh slate with flat stone gable copings.
The house has a courtyard plan, encompassing three ranges and a wall to the north side. The south front was substantially re-modelled in the 19th century and now has five windows. The walling is disturbed, including a central section in ashlar. A central six-pane sash window is flanked by 20th-century doors with overlights, which are in turn flanked by further six-pane sashes. Above are five similar sash windows, with the one above the right-hand door being blind.
The east front displays a very large, stepped external stack with small, deeply chamfered fire windows on the upper floors. To the right are two sixteen-pane sashes, with two through-eaves sixteen-pane sashes above. A 20th-century brick lean-to addition is located to the right. The north front features a deep, central segmental arch with a hood mould and a date stone above inscribed "DVMSPIROSPERO ANNO 1653", surmounted by shallow battlements with Latin inscriptions. Within the arch is a four-centred arched doorway with a moulded stone surround featuring ribbon decoration and inscribed "S C 1635" and a Tudor hood mould. Two two-storey wings flank the arch, with coped gables. The wing to the left is partially obscured by 20th-century brick lean-to additions on the ground floor, and a 19th-century twelve-pane sash window is located above. The wing to the right is also partially obscured by 20th-century brick additions, with a chamfered four-centred arched window opening with a two-light Yorkshire sash above, and a small, blocked two-light chamfered mullion window further above. The west front has a blank gable wall to the right and two sixteen-pane sashes to the left, with two similar sashes above.
The inner courtyard’s south wall features a central four-centred arched doorway with a decorated lintel and Tudor hood mould, now housing a stable window. To the right is a 19th-century plank door, and to the left a chamfered single-light opening. Above the central doorway is a three-light chamfered mullion window with a hood mould, and above again a chamfered opening under a Tudor hood mould containing a two-light wooden casement. The east wall has a single four-centred arched doorway to the right, inscribed "ANNO MDCLII", and a similar upper doorway to the left, both now blocked.
The interior, which has not been inspected, is reported to contain various original four-centred arched doorways and chimney pieces, some of which are partially blocked while others have been recently exposed. Fragments of contemporary wall paintings remain in the kitchen.
