Description
The Gosforth War Memorial Pillar is located in the center of Gosforth Central Park. It is approximately 4 meters tall and constructed from red Carlisle sandstone. The memorial features a broad octagonal pillar topped with a moulded capstone, which stands on a large square plinth raised on a stepped base. The entire structure is surrounded by metal railings.
A bronze plaque on the front face of the plinth bears the main dedicatory inscription, which states that the column and the adjacent building were erected by public subscription in memory of the men of Gosforth who fell in the Great War from 1914 to 1918, with their names inscribed on a tablet in the vestibule of the building.
On the rear of the plinth, a later bronze plaque indicates that the hall to the west of the stone, also erected with public subscription, was dedicated on Remembrance Day, November 6, 1949, as a memorial to those who lost their lives while serving in Her Majesty's Forces and the Merchant Navy during the 1939-1945 War.
