Description

Trinity Church is a Methodist church dating from 1877, designed by Septimus Oswald & Son. The church is constructed of ashlar with slate roofs, terracotta ridge tiles, and lead finials. It features a chamfered plinth.

The east entrance front has a central pointed arched doorway framed by a moulded ashlar surround, now with late 20th-century double doors, flanked by single, chamfered lancet windows under a continuous hood mould. Above this is a large triple lancet window within an elaborately moulded surround, and above that a circular window in the gable apex. To the left is an octagonal stair tower; its narrower upper stages feature quatrefoils and tall, narrow lancets, topped by an octagonal ashlar spire. Beyond this are a single lancet on the ground floor and two above. To the right is an apsidal ended entrance with a single pointed arched doorway and two lancets above.

The north and south facades have simple lancet windows on the ground floor and above the galleries. Gabled transepts project on both sides, each with pairs of lancets below and pairs of 2-light pointed arched windows above, with reticulated tracery. The apsidal west end has three narrow lancets.

The interior is largely intact, featuring original wooden U-plan galleries supported by cast iron columns, with similar columns above supporting pointed wooden arcades and a fine boarded roof. Original pews are present on the ground floor and in the galleries. Other original fittings include a wooden panelled dado, organ case, lectern, and altar rail. A wooden screen separates the entrance from the nave, incorporating pointed arched windows and doors with geometric stained glass.
