Description
The Theatre or Recreation Room at St Nicholas Hospital is a former theatre and chapel, now serving as a recreation room. It was built in 1865 and designed by JW Dyson of Newcastle. The building features coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and slate roofs, along with ashlar coped gables topped with tall finials. The gables include small circular windows with glazing bars, while the side elevations have six round-headed windows. Inside, the room is adorned with plain Roman Doric pilasters throughout. At the west end, there is a raised stage framed by a segmental archway, which is decorated with Royal Doulton tiles. The spandrels of this proscenium arch also feature Royal Doulton tiles, designed in an Art Nouveau style.
