Description
The Clara Vale War Memorial is located in a small garden at the road junction next to Edington Cottages. The garden is surrounded by a low brick wall with stone coping and topped with ornamental wrought iron railings. The tall monument is made of Aberdeen granite and features a Classical urn draped with a cloth, which stands on the corniced top of a tall square plinth. The plinth has a two-stage base and rests on a sandstone step.
Each side of the plinth is cut back to create a raised, pyramidal surface that displays inscriptions. The main dedication on the front face reads: "IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS COLLIERY WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 (NAMES)." The names of two individuals from the Second World War are inscribed on the left side, along with the dates 1939 - 1945.
