Description

Heddon Hall is a house dating from the 18th century, which was extended in the early 19th century and remodelled in 1824 for I.M. Bates. The building features dressed stone on the right side and ashlar elsewhere, topped with a Welsh slate roof. It is designed in a classical style and has two storeys with five bays. The former central doorway has been converted into a window, which now contains a full-length 12-pane sash set within a Tuscan entablature. The flanking bays, including the current door on the left, have plain reveals and semicircular pediments supported by stone brackets. The outer bays feature four-pane sashes in plain reveals, while the first floor has 12-pane sashes. The plain frieze, cornice, and blocking course date from 1824. The roof is hipped on the left side and includes ridge and end stacks.

On the left return, there is a two-storey square tower with a four-pane sash on the ground floor and a round-headed window on the first floor, which has radiating glazing bars and a dated keystone.

Inside, the main features date from the 1820s to 1830s. The hall has a coffered ceiling and a Greek-style fireplace with battered jambs and a pedimented lintel, adorned with acroteria at the corners. The drawing room also has a coffered ceiling with a Greek-key design along the borders. An impressive cantilevered open-well staircase features a ramped and wreathed handrail with hexagonal-plan balusters. The interior includes six-panel doors and shutters, as well as many early 19th-century fireplaces.
