Description

Wylam Station and the Station-Master's House were built in 1835 and are notable examples of early railway architecture. The station, constructed from ashlar stone with a Welsh slate roof, features a single-storey design. On the left side, there is a recessed veranda at the center, supported by two cast-iron Tuscan columns. The ticket office on the right retains its original ticket window, which has a segmental arch and a decorative iron grille. It also includes two large windows and a door with chamfered alternating-block surrounds, although these are now boarded up. The waiting room, partially filling the left side of the veranda, has two windows in similar boarded surrounds and two 16-pane sash windows at the rear. The roof is hipped and has a central corniced stone chimney.

Attached to the right is the Station-Master's House, designed in the Tudor style. This two-storey building has three bays and a central doorway with a double-chamfered surround. The ground floor features two-light windows with similar surrounds, which are adorned with hoodmoulds. The center window on the first floor is set in a gabled oriel supported by rounded wood corbels. The gutter is held up by rounded stone corbels, and the gabled roof has rendered brick end stacks on stone corniced bases, also supported by stone corbels.

Wylam Station is recognized as one of the earliest stations in the world still in use for passenger services, and it is included in the heritage register primarily for its historical significance.
