Description

The Church of St. Oswin is a parish church built in 1886 by R.J. Johnson. It is constructed mainly of snecked rubble and features a Lakeland slate roof. The church includes a nave and chancel, a south porch, a south tower, a north vestry, and an organ chamber, all designed in the Perpendicular style. The three-bay nave has a timber porch with delicate tracery and two-light windows. The tall embattled tower is supported by angle buttresses and features two-light bell openings and gargoyles; it also functions as a transept internally. The two-bay chancel showcases unusual Perpendicular tracery, with east and west windows that are five-light with panel tracery. The organ chamber and vestry, which have a catslide roof, are also treated as a transept inside. The gables are raised and have ridged and roll-moulded coping, and there is a wrought-iron vane on the tower.

Inside, the church features a canted barrel-vaulted wood panelled ceiling adorned with carved bosses and a frieze. The chancel ceiling is painted with Tudor roses and foliage and includes a carved relief frieze of vines. The pews, pulpit, and doors are decorated with linenfold carving, and there are screens and altar rails that feature panels of tracery, along with a traceried reredos.
