Description
The Wylam War Memorial is located on War Memorial Green, at the north end of Wylam Bridge. This tall cross is made of Windy Nook stone and features an ornamented Latin cross that rises from a moulded collar on a tapering shaft. The base of the shaft is moulded and sits on an octagonal plinth, which is elevated on steps made of Heworth stone. The stepped base is surrounded by York stone flagstones.
Four faces of the plinth display bronze plaques. The main dedicatory inscription on the front plaque reads: "ERECTED BY/ THE PEOPLE OF/ WYLAM/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ 'THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US/ BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY.'/ I.SAM.XXV.16." This plaque is decorated with a small wreath and an interlace pattern border. On the adjacent faces of the plinth, there are similar plaques listing the names of those commemorated from the First World War. The fourth plaque commemorates the Second World War with the inscription "1939 – 1945/ (11 NAMES)."
