Description
The Old School, originally the colliery school and now Wylam Assembly Church, was built in 1854. It features an ashlar exterior and a Welsh slate roof, and is designed in an L-shape over two storeys. The long arm of the L has two irregularly placed 12-pane sash windows on each floor. The projecting wing to the right has one 12-pane sash window on each floor and a small 6-pane staircase window. All windows have alternating block jambs and slightly projecting sills. There is one door located in a later random rubble porch at the angle of the L, and another door on the right return.
The building has gabled roofs with flat coping and kneelers, as well as stone corniced end stacks on the rear wing and a lateral stack on the projecting wing. A dated gabled bellcote is situated on the gable of the projecting wing. The Old School is noted for its historical significance as an example of educational service to the colliery community.
