Description
This building is a barn, byre range, and foldyard located about 10 meters west of Wheatlands Farmhouse, dating from the mid to late 18th century for the barn and early to mid 19th century for the byres. The foldyard was roofed over in the mid to late 19th century. The barn is constructed of brick with a dressed sandstone plinth and dressings, topped with a mid-20th century concrete tiled roof. The byres are made of dressed sandstone and feature clay pantile roofs, all of which have stone ridge and gable copings along with block kneelers. The foldyard has a timber "Yorkshire-boarded" roof.
The barn is two storeys high, while the byres are single storey, arranged around the four sides of the foldyard. The barn has a chamfered plinth and quoins, with gable ends featuring cart openings that have mid-20th century boarded sliding doors, and partly-blocked windows beneath segmental relieving arches. There are breather vents on the north and west faces. The west byre has three similar doors on its west face and a blocked doorway in the south gable end. The south byre has a blocked doorway on its south face, and the east byre has a similar door in its south gable end. The foldyard is covered by a two-span hipped roof. Inside the barn, there is a gallery at the east end, and the roof features triple-collared principals and butt purlins.
