Cottages and former stables to Marske Hall (qv). Early C18, with late C19 and C20 alterations. MATERIALS: long range of stables and offices with 2 cottages at south end and outbuildings on south return. Coursed squared sandstone with plinth and ashlar dressings; roof of concrete tiles with red brick chimneys, yellow brick dormers to one cottage and stone gable coping. PLAN: L-plan EXTERIOR: one and 2 storeys, 13 bay-range arranged 3:2:8, the 8 left bays formerly 3 cottages with interlocking levels. East elevation: at left, one storey cottage with 8-pane horizontal sliding sash overlight to boarded door to left of centre; sash with glazing bars at each side, small boarded opening with 3 top panes to right of door, all with flat stone lintels. Similar lintels to all openings and glazing bars to all windows. 2 gabled roof dormers of brick have sashes with glazing bars and moulded stone kneelers. Next cottage slightly higher with boarded door to left of centre and sash at right; small first floor 4-pane window at left; sash in stone half dormer breaking eaves above ground-floor sash. Long stable range set back at right has C20 door in second bay, boarded door on 4th; ground-floor sashes and horizontal sliding sashes above. Roof higher over second cottage, which has right end chimney; ridge chimneys at left and over fourth bay of stable range. Left return has round stone arch with voussoirs at right under gable peak; altered opening at left under second gable peak, the gables linked by a parapet with continuous coping. Right return has rolling double boarded doors below boarded double loft doors under gable peak. Rear elevation has central door under flat stone lintel and raised coping in high yard wall which runs from outhouses at south end. INTERIOR: not inspected.
