Description
The stables at The Wellnage on Station Road in Duns consist of a courtyard stable block with a T-plan cottage attached, dating from various building campaigns in the mid 19th to 20th century. The structure is made of sandstone with ashlar dressings and is mostly harled, featuring boarded doors.
The northern range of the original L-plan stable block forms two sides of the courtyard. It includes an arched carriage opening on the left and a broad garage opening with folding doors in the center and to the right. There is a loft door with a hoist located in a gable-headed dormer at the center. The eastern range has three stable doors facing the courtyard, and the outer flank features gable-headed doors leading to the loft. The western side of the courtyard is open but has a roof, with a door to the south. There is a carriage arch to the south with two-leaf doors, topped with a gablehead that includes kneelers, a large finial, and a much-eroded shield.
At the northwest corner, where the roof of the western range extends to join the cottage to the north, there is an arcaded ashlar bellcote with an ogee roof and a ball finial. The roofs are pitched and piended, covered with grey slates.
The Wellfield Cottage, built in the late 19th century, is a single-storey and attic, three-bay cottage with a piend roof. It is constructed of stugged ashlar and features a centrally located flush panelled door with a letterbox fanlight, flanked by bipartite windows with ashlar mullions and stop-chamfered arrises. A large box dormer is also present.
Additionally, there is a later two-storey gabled range at right angles to the rear of the cottage, which is dry-dashed and has windows on both floors and doors on the return to the south, facing the stables. This range features timber sash and case windows, with a lying-pane window on the front. A central ashlar stack is banded and corniced, and the roof is also covered with grey slates.
