Description

Maryfield and its gatepiers, located on Murray Street in Duns, is an early 19th-century classical villa that has been extended at the rear. The building is two stories tall, set on a raised basement, and features a three-bay design. The principal elevations are made of droved cream ashlar sandstone with polished dressings, including a base course, cornice, and low parapet, while the secondary elevations are constructed from rubble.

On the southeast, or principal elevation, the center bay is slightly advanced and features six steps leading up to a Tuscan doorpiece flanked by engaged columns beside a round-headed doorway. This doorway contains a two-leaf panelled door topped with a semi-circular plate glass fanlight, and there is a window on the first floor. The flanking bays have windows on all floors, and there are panelled corner pilasters.

The northeast elevation is three bays wide, with windows in all bays on the ground and first floors. The basement has a door to the right along with flanking windows, and there is a wallhead stack to the left of center. The upper left window is false.

The northwest, or rear elevation, is irregular and features a large stained glass stair window at the center, along with additional windows to the left.

The southwest elevation is also irregular and consists of three bays. The two right bays have windows to the exposed basement and first floor, with the rightmost window being false. There is a large window on the left at ground level, and a wallhead stack is situated between the bays. The left bay includes a door at the basement and windows on the upper floors.

The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case, with plate glass on the ground floor and 12-pane windows on the first floor. The roof is piended and covered with grey slates, and the ashlar stacks are corniced with octagonal cans.

The interior was not seen in 1993.

The boundary wall and gatepiers consist of a rubble wall topped with saddleback ashlar coping. The gatepiers are a pair of square ashlar structures with stepped pyramidal caps and stop-chamfered arrises, complemented by wrought-iron gates.
