Description
This is an early 19th-century villa, with extensions added in the mid-19th century, located on Station Road, Duns. The villa is largely symmetrical, originally a two-storey and attic three-bay design, with a sympathetic two-bay addition to the north. It is constructed of dressed cream sandstone, featuring regular fenestration.
The west elevation displays an original section with a base course and a canted bay at the centre, featuring windows on its flanks. Added bays are visible, with the first having a smaller ground-floor window, and an outer bay slightly recessed and blank at ground level, set back further with a first-floor window. A large five-light timber box dormer is positioned on the left section of the roof.
The south elevation is two bays wide, with a blind first-floor window on the left. A later, set-back entrance bay is located on the right.
The east elevation originally presented a three-bay house, to which a full-height projecting entrance bay has been added at the centre. This bay has a flat roof with moulded eaves. The central bay has windows on each floor, and the south return features a polished ashlar Tuscan Doric pilastered doorpiece with a round-headed doorway containing two-leaf panelled doors, a plate glass fanlight, a first-floor window, and a wrought-iron lantern at the angle. The north return has a first-floor window. The left bay has a blocked ground-floor window and a blind first-floor window, whilst the right bay has two ground-floor windows and a first-floor window. An added bay to the right mirrors the west elevation, with windows to both floors and a recessed outer right bay containing a narrow ground-floor window, a blank section, and a further set-back first-floor window. A second lantern is located at the angle. A screen wall with balustraded parapet encloses two bays to the right of the projecting bay.
The north elevation displays two bays at centre with windows to both floors; a boarded door and a four-pane rectangular fanlight are present in the left bay at ground level. Narrow blank outer sections are set back at the first floor. Moulded eaves and a blocking course are present, as is a two-light box dormer mirroring those on other elevations. A convex screen wall with a balustraded parapet runs along the ground.
The villa has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with four panes to the entrance bay and plate glass lower sashes to the dormers. The roof is piended and covered in grey slates, with rendered chimney stacks.
The interior features a large, top-lit staircase hall with a gallery on the first floor. A dining room is situated in the canted ground-floor bay, with a drawing room located above.
The boundary is marked by square ashlar gatepiers with a base course, sunken panels and ball finials, accompanied by cast-iron arrowhead gates. Swept stugged ashlar screen walls with moulded coping are terminated by large square ashlar piers with flattened pyramidal caps. Sandstone boundary walls have semi-circular coping.
