Description
The building is a garage located at The Hermitage on Station Road in Duns, dating from around 1840. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure designed in a Tudor style, featuring a front made of stugged cream ashlar sandstone with polished dressings and a base course, along with chamfered reveals.
The east elevation is symmetrical, showcasing gabled dormerheads with moulded skews and carved finials. At the ground level, there is a central gabled doorpiece with corbel skewputts, leading to a deep-set two-leaf panelled door topped by a decorative multi-pane fanlight, and an original glazed inner door. The flanking bays have projecting bipartite windows with stone piended roofs. On the first floor, each bay has a window positioned just under the eaves, with gabled dormerheads above; the central dormer features a blind arrowslit and corbelled skewputts, while the flanking gableheads display blank shields.
The north elevation has a gable end with a window to the right on the first floor. There is a lower two-storey wing to the right that includes a door and window at ground level and a window on the first floor.
The west elevation features a blank projecting wing to the left and a flat-roofed dry-dashed single-storey extension in the re-entrant angle, which has railings forming a platform. Above this extension, there is a stair window in the main block. The right bay includes a later French window at ground level and a window on the first floor.
The south elevation has a gable end with windows on both floors to the left. A set-back rear wing consists of three irregular bays, with an addition in the re-entrant angle masking the two right bays at ground level; there are windows on the first floor, and the left bay has windows on both floors.
The windows throughout are timber sash and case, mostly with 12 panes, though some have 12 and 8 panes. The building features ashlar coped skews and corbel skewputts, grey slate roofing, and a piended rear wing. The brick stacks have been rebuilt.
The garage to the north is constructed of gabled sandstone with moulded skews and corbel skewputts, and it has a lean-to extension at the front with a corrugated-iron roof and two-leaf boarded doors.
The boundary wall is made of stugged ashlar with saddleback coping and curves into square ashlar gatepiers that have a base course, chamfered arrises, and ogee caps. There is a single cast-iron gate, with the north pier carved with the name "THE HERMITAGE." Additionally, there is a pedestrian gate and piers to the side.
