Description

This is a later 19th century maternity hospital, originally a house, situated on Station Road, Duns. The building comprises a two-storey, three-bay gabled main block, with a lower, single-storey range projecting to the north. A further attic space is incorporated. The front elevation is of stugged cream sandstone ashlar, while the secondary facades are of dressed rubble, with polished ashlar dressings. Window reveals are stop-chamfered with torus mouldings, and some windows are canted with cast-iron balustrades to their parapets. Crowsteps are a notable feature.

The east (entrance) elevation features a three-bay, two-storey block with an advanced gabled bay to the left. A canted window is located on the ground floor, and the first floor includes a bipartite window with a roll-moulded architrave framing a blind oculus above. An apex stack is corbelled out. A porch is situated within the re-entrant angle, supported by columns with stylised gothic capitals and a heavily moulded upper architrave to the doorpiece. The door is panelled and has a panelled fanlight, with a glazed inner door and a concrete access ramp. A cornice and parapet with cast-iron balustrade complete the elevation. A bipartite window is positioned in the right bay at ground level. First-floor windows are present in the centre and right bays, each with gabled dormerheads. A lower bay is slightly set back to the right, incorporating a ground-floor window and an attic window breaking the eaves with a gabled dormerhead.

The south elevation is also three bays wide. The left bay is slightly advanced and gabled, with a two-storey canted window and a rosette in the gablehead. The centre and right bays each contain windows on every floor, with a bipartite window to the right at ground level, and gabled dormerheads above the first-floor windows.

The west elevation shows the main three-bay block connecting to a modern building in the centre and right bays. The centre bay is gabled and advanced, with a window on the first floor and a rosette in the gablehead. The right bay is gabled and blank, while the left bay features two ground-floor windows and one first-floor window. The lower bay to the left mirrors the design of the east elevation.

The north elevation is M-gabled, with a pair of windows at the centre on the first floor. A lower, M-gabled wing projects from the ground floor, featuring a bipartite window in each bay at ground level and a single window above in the gablehead. A door is located to the right of centre, with a narrow window adjoining to the left.

The building now has modern plate glass tilt and swing timber windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, with coped ashlar apex stacks. Gableted crowsteps are present where the roof lines meet, alongside corbelled skewputts.

A rubble boundary wall with semi-circular coping defines the site. Square gatepiers topped with ball finials mark the entrances. A section of wall to the north features flat ashlar coping that scrolls down to the gatepiers.
