Description
Guisborough General Hospital, specifically the west block and the adjoining wing, was originally built as a Union Workhouse in 1839 by J.B. and W. Atkinson from York. The building is constructed from chevron dressed sandstone with tooled margins and features a hipped Welsh slate roof with two stacks. It stands two storeys high and exhibits a plain late classical style. The structure has seven bays, with the end bays projecting slightly forward. The corners are accentuated with painted rusticated and vermiculated quoins.
The ground floor windows are slightly recessed and have moulded stone sills and lintels, except for the end bays, which feature shouldered architraves that extend to the ground. The first-floor sills and lintels continue as string courses. The windows are early 20th-century casements. A central doorway is adorned with a moulded stone architrave and consoles that support a cornice hood, featuring a mid-20th-century door and a rectangular fanlight above.
The listing also includes the lower, adjoining south wing, which projects forward from the main building and was constructed in the mid-19th century using the same materials. This wing has a gable end that faces Northgate and is also two storeys tall, featuring a first-floor semi-circular window at the top of a round-headed recessed panel. The additions to the rear and further south are not of interest.
