Description

The ruins of a late 12th-century gatehouse, originally belonging to Gisborough Priory, stand on Church Street. It was part of the entrance to the former priory. A large, moulded, semi-circular archway gives access to Church Street. The south side of the gatehouse is divided into a round-headed archway for pedestrians and an elliptical arch for vehicles. To the east, the flanking wall contains a fireplace and a small cell with plain doorway and window openings. The site is a scheduled Ancient Monument. Historical sources including the Victoria County History and Pevsner's Buildings of England offer further detail, as does a publication by R. Gilyard-Beer.
