Description
The powder magazine and adjoining blast walls are part of the former Trustee Drift Level ironstone mine, built around 1870 for Bolckow and Vaughan Ltd., who were ironmasters. The structure is made of cast slag concrete, with the magazine partially covered by earth. It features a central projecting porch with a segment-headed doorway and square window openings on the sides, although the door and window frames are missing. Both the magazine and the porch have barrel roofs. The approach to the magazine is flanked by serpentine blast walls that have flat copings, which ramp down to a gateway with square piers. Inside, there are two storage chambers, although the racks have been removed. At the time of the last survey, the building was disused and in a dilapidated state. It is included in the register for its industrial archaeological interest.
