Description
The Cottages, now three separate houses, were originally built in the early to mid-18th century, with a further extension added in the early 19th century. The houses are constructed of brick and have Lakeland slate roofs, although the front slopes have been renewed with Welsh slates and concrete tiles at the rear. The main house has two storeys and four windows. A six-panel door with a glazed overlight, featuring glazing bars, is located in the second bay, alongside a similar door and overlight in a former window opening to the right. Sash windows with glazing bars are present throughout, with all openings framed by gauged brick flat arches. The brickwork incorporates two-course stepped bands between the floors and at the eaves. The ends of the building feature stacks. A two-storey extension, with a basement, runs to the left, and features a single bay. A renewed window is present on the extension's ground floor. The roof of the extension is hipped at the left end. The left return features a renewed six-panel door with a glazed overlight, positioned under a timber bracketed and gabled hood accessed by three steps. A 15-pane horizontal sash window is present on the left, alongside a sash with glazing bars and three further similar windows on the first floor, the one on the right having been renewed. Again, all windows are set within gauged brick flat arches, and a stack is located at the left end. The right-hand portion of The Cottages, No. 7, is now incorporated into No. 8. Internally, the ground-floor rooms of No. 8 contain moulded ceiling cornices. Two-panel doors with "H" hinges can also be found in No. 8.
