Description

The Ha-Ha wall at the entrance to Sir William Turner's Hospital, dating from around 1750, is a notable structure. It features a brick construction with dressed sandstone buttresses, copings, posts, piers, and bollards. The wall is designed to curve out towards the gateway and includes chamfered copings that support chamfered square posts, which have a moulded border beneath their saucer-domed caps. Wrought iron chains are suspended from the posts and intermediate scroll-bracketed supports, which are topped with baluster finials. The short square piers have projecting, shallow ogee-domed caps, and the bollards, which are similar to the posts, are set forward of the piers. This structure is included for its group value.
