Description
The remains of Kilton Castle, dating from the 12th century, are located approximately 30 meters east of Castle Cottages. The castle was built for a tenant of Count de Mortain and was partly rebuilt in the 13th century before being abandoned in the 14th century. The structure is made of coursed random sandstone rubble and dressed sandstone and is currently roofless. It has a long, narrow, roughly rectangular plan that projects eastwards into a deep ravine.
At the west end, there is a causeway flanked by the remains of a moat. The remains include the lower two storeys of the north, east, and west walls of a tower located at the northeast angle of the inner bailey. This tower has a rectangular plan with a segmental north end, a cross-arrow loop on the north side, and a fireplace with moulded corbels in the ground floor of the west wall.
Additionally, there are the lower parts of a 13th-century bastion situated between the northeast tower and the basement of the north and west walls of the 13th-century great tower, which projects from the north curtain. The north and west walls of the 12th-century banqueting hall at the northwest angle of the outer bailey are also preserved in two storeys. The lower parts of the 12th and 13th-century curtain walls on the east side and the rubble core of the lower parts of the south curtain wall are still visible.
