Description
A barn, stable, wash-house, and byre dating from around 1800, situated south-east of Barton House. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins defining the corners and openings. It has clay pantile roofs with stone ridge and gable copings, and block kneelers. The structure follows an "L" shape, forming a yard; the barn occupies the east side, while the stable and an adjoining wash-house are on the south side, and a byre is to the north of the barn. A deep plinth is present, and clay pipe breathers are set below the eaves on the barn's front elevation facing the street. The barn's street-facing side has two stable doors fitted with iron strap hinges, and two renewed fixed-light windows set within original openings. The stable has a similar door on the right and boarded double doors on the left. The wash-house features two similar stable doors and a matching window. The byre has two stable doors and a boarded door on its south face; a Victorian posting box is set into the north face. All sections of the building incorporate principal-rafter trusses. Farm buildings adjoining the west side of the byre have been altered and are not considered to have significant architectural interest. Formerly part of Shrubberies Farm.
