Description
The outbuildings located 25 metres north of Hollybush Farmhouse are a bastle house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations made in the late 17th century or 18th century. These structures now serve as an agricultural store, alongside an adjoining barn built in the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed of rubble with long, roughly-shaped quoins and feature a 20th-century asbestos roof.
The bastle house is two storeys tall with an attic and consists of two bays. It has an off-centre blocked door from the late 17th century, which has chamfered jambs and shows remnants of an inscribed or dated panel on the lintel. To the right, there is a boarded door set in a raised tooled surround, and to the left, a decayed 12-pane sash window. The first floor includes a 16-pane sash window and a small 6-pane fixed light, while a low window is present in the attic just below the eaves.
The adjacent barn features a door with alternating jambs and a pitching door above, topped with a slate roof. The right return of the bastle, inside the barn, has a central blocked doorway with a roughly 4-centred chamfered arch and a drawbar tunnel. The rear elevation displays a first-floor window with a recessed wood frame that supports stout iron bars, along with a projecting stone spout to the right.
Inside, the building contains various 18th-century features, including fireplaces and a staircase. A heavy central roof truss with a re-set collar is also present. The outbuildings were formerly known as Water Holme Garth.
