Description
White Lea House and the adjacent farm building are a bastle house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations made in the late 17th century. The farm building is likely from the late 18th century. The house is constructed of massive rubble with roughly-shaped quoins and stone dressings, while the farm building is also made of rubble with dressings and features stone slate roofs.
The house has two storeys and irregular window arrangements. It has a central boarded door with alternating jambs; to the left is a 20th-century window, and to the right is a two-light window with an ovolo-section mullion and old iron bars. The lintel above this window is inscribed with 'N : L : K : L : APR : 1682' surrounded by stylised foliage. On the first floor, there is a small slit window and two small windows in chamfered surrounds, one of which retains its old iron bar and is set within the blocking of an earlier first-floor door. The house features old stone gable stacks, with the left stack heightened when the farm building was constructed.
The adjacent farm building has two doorways with alternating jambs and two ground-floor boarded doors, one of which is in an old chamfered surround. There is also a loading door above and to the right. Inside the farm building, a blocked byre door of the original bastle is visible, featuring a chamfered surround. Additionally, an original small first-floor loop in the rear wall of the bastle now opens into a later outshut. This property is a good example of a bastle house that was modified in the late 17th century, with a later farm building providing byre and barn facilities.
