Description

Harbut Lodge is a detached house dated 1838, as indicated by a datestone on the rear that reads 'RF 1838'. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, smooth on the front and tooled on the other elevations, and features a hipped roof made of Westmoreland slate. It has a double-fronted, double-depth plan with rear-central stairs and paired end stacks. The house stands two storeys tall, with a single-storey service range at the rear.

The eaves are deeply overhanging, and there is a chamfered plinth throughout. The front facade is symmetrical with a three-window range, featuring canted bays that have 4:8:4-pane hornless sashes, with the side windows including margin panes. The doorway has a moulded surround and a simple stone canopy supported by consoles, with deep reveals and a depressed-panelled door topped by an overlight.

On the first floor, all windows are 12-pane hornless sashes with plain surrounds and stone canopies on consoles, the central one topped with a swan-necked pediment. A sill band runs along the first floor and returns to the side elevations. The double external side stacks join at the level of the first floor window arches and are contained under an eaves pediment with a central lunette. The right-hand end has blank windows, while the left features sashes and a 19th-century lean-to conservatory. The rear windows are sashed and fitted with louvred shutters.

The simple service wing at the rear is made of coursed rubble, with ashlar window and door surrounds and a brick ridge stack. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is understood to contain an open-well stair with a curved rail, fire-surrounds, and contemporary doors, all of which survived a fire in 1989.
