Description

Station House is a building that served as a station and station-master's house, constructed in 1852 as the terminus for the Alston branch of the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway. It is made of coursed, squared rubble with a string course between the floors and features Welsh slate roofs with corniced stone chimneys. The gabled ends of the cross wings have stone copings with ball finials on the kneelers and apex, showcasing a Tudor style.

The building has a symmetrical, two-storey, four-bay front. Each projecting wing contains a part-glazed door with a hoodmould and a four-centred arched head. There is a single sash window in a lugged surround on either side of the doors, along with a three-light mullioned window with a hoodmould on the first floor. The main block features two two-light mullioned windows with hoodmoulds on each floor.

On the west elevation, there are two part-glazed doors with pointed heads at the center. To the left, there is a canted bay and a panelled door, while the right side has paired windows with four-centred heads. The original first-floor openings in the north wing were replaced by a single sash window, and the main block has a central sash window in a lugged surround. A single-storey lean-to has been added at the south end. The original ticket window is located in the north wall, and a later flat-roofed toilet block adjoins the north end.
