Description
The Church of St Augustine is a parish church built in 1870 by J.W. Walton, with a spire added in 1886 by G. D. Oliver, replacing a church from 1770 designed by Smeaton on a medieval site. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, featuring a plinth, buttresses, and moulded eaves, with Welsh slate roofs topped with apex crosses at the stone copings. It has a nave with a south aisle and a lower chancel, along with a south porch beneath an offset three-stage tower adorned with corner pinnacles. The church is designed in the Early English style, showcasing lancet and plate tracery windows, with the nave clerestory windows being three-light under segmental arches. A trumeau separates the porch doors, which are shouldered and flanked by marble nook shafts, and the tympanum depicts Christ in Majesty.
Inside, the four-bay nave features an arcade supported by squat polished granite piers with foliate capitals. The three-bay chancel includes a painted five-panel reredos, and the east window was designed by Wooldridge and made by Powell. The font in the nave has a round bowl on a central stem, supported by detached marble shafts. A Derwentwater clock on the west wall, presented in 1767 and restored in 1978, adds historical significance, along with a wrought-iron weather vane dated 1770, which is now displayed inside.
