Description
Market Cross, first erected in 1764, was rebuilt in 1883 and then knocked down and re-erected in 1970 and again in 1981. A panel with the original inscription is now located in the Parish Church, stating: "This Market Cross was erected by The Right Honourable SR WILLIAM STEPHENSON Kn born at Cross Lands in this Parish and elected LORD MAYOR OF LONDON 1764." The cross has a square plan with block plinths that feature stop chamfers and moulded bases. It is supported by eight monolithic columns, three on each side, topped with bell caps that hold up a pyramidal, graduated stone flag roof, which has a 20th-century lantern at the apex. There are three steps leading up to the original cross-site, where a replacement stone shaft carries a central crown post. Inscriptions on the shaft detail the history of the structure.
