Description
Ayle Well and the adjacent farm building is a house with a cottage on the left, now functioning as a single dwelling, along with a farm building next to the cottage. The main structure dates from around 1730 but includes masonry from around 1600 and the late 17th century, with restoration work carried out around 1980. The building is constructed of rubble with stone dressings, featuring stone slate roofs on the house and cottage, while the farm building has a 20th-century metal roof.
The house is two storeys high with two wide bays. It has a central boarded door flanked by former two-light mullioned windows, with the left window having been restored. The first floor has similar windows flanking a central narrow window set in a chamfered surround. The cottage to the left is three storeys tall with two bays. It features an external stone stair over the ground-floor door, which has a small loop to the left, leading to a central first-floor door flanked by former two-light windows. There are smaller windows in chamfered surrounds on the second floor. The rear elevation shows a boarded door leading to the byre.
The farm building to the left of the cottage incorporates earlier fabric, likely from a bastle house, and is included for its group value. There is a single-storey extension to the right of the house that is not of interest.
