Description
Mill Cottage, with attached outbuildings north of Lemmington Hall, is a late 18th-century structure that was remodelled in 1915. It features tooled or tooled-and-margined stone with concrete infill and later snecked stone, topped with graduated stone flag roofs and stone ridges. The building is single-storey and divided into three sections.
The left section, originally a kennel, has a parapet front and includes three ledged and boarded doors, an inserted quasi-medieval window, and a pointed fixed light above the central door. There is a small kennel enclosure to the left, enclosed by wrought-iron railings on a dwarf wall.
The central section has five bays, with garage doors in the fourth bay. The first three bays were originally open but have been infilled with large 20th-century casement windows. A central raised parapet, supported by console brackets, displays the date 1915, and there are two lion masks attached at the eaves.
The right bay has been incorporated into an added projecting cottage, which features two bays on the inner return. This section includes a studded plank door with an interlaced overlight and 2- and 3-light casement windows, the latter in rock-faced surrounds. There are also two additional lion masks between the windows and an inserted Venetian window with an interlaced head in the end wall. A small stepped-and-banded ridge stack completes the structure.
The building is included for its group value.
