Description

The garden and paddock walls to the south of Hartlaw Farm Cottages date from the late 17th century and are constructed of squared rubble with cut dressings. These walls flank the current gardens immediately south of the cottages and extend outward to enclose a larger square area, which is now a field.

The east wall of the present garden stands 2.5 metres high and features a two-course monopitch coping. It steps up over a boarded door set in an alternating-block surround near the north end, where a short return connects to the south-east corner of No. 2. The west wall is similar in construction but includes a 20th-century doorway and has lost its coping.

The wall on the west and north-west sides of the field retains its coping and rises to 5 metres at the southern end, which is downhill. This section includes a blocked door with a raised and chamfered stone surround, as well as a chamfered doorway with a flat-pointed arch. The coping slopes steeply down at the west end of the south wall, and the central section is raised above a chamfered former doorway, with the lower jambs still visible. The east and north-east walls have been reduced to half their original height, and in the centre of the east wall, the chamfered jambs of a former archway, which was 2.5 metres wide, can still be seen.
