Description

The farmbuilding group located to the north of Southside Farmhouse is a planned collection of structures, with the west range likely dating from the 18th century and altered around 1840 when an engine house was added. The north range also dates from the 18th century but was modified in the early 19th century. The west range is constructed of roughly-coursed stone with tooled-and-margined quoins, dressings, and a chimney stack, while the north range is made of rubble with roughly-shaped quoins and cut dressings. Both ranges feature Welsh slate roofs and form an overall L-plan.

The west range consists of three sections. The single-storey left part includes a through-passage at the left end, four boarded doors, and one window. The taller central section has boarded double doors under a segmental arch, a boarded door, and three slit vents above. The two-storey barn at the right end, which is partly behind the north range, has boarded and stable doors along with two loft windows that have slightly-projecting sills. Most openings are framed with chamfered alternating-block surrounds and the gables are coped. The north end of the barn features a boarded pitching door in a tooled-and-margined chamfered surround, along with two older chamfered openings, one of which is blocked. The rear elevation shows the engine house projecting from the barn, complete with a truncated stack on the right return.

The north range is two storeys high and has ten irregular bays. It includes three pairs of segmental arches, which are early 19th-century additions with chamfered surrounds, two boarded doors, and an external stone stair leading to a boarded loft door. Slatted loft windows are positioned directly beneath the eaves, and the left gable is coped. The rear features a boarded loft door and similar loft windows.

Inside, the engine house contains an engine sump pit and a millstone on a timber platform. A pent cart shed is located at the rear of the north range, and a 20th-century shed is situated to the north of the engine house, but these later additions are not of special interest.
